Monaco’s Christmas Market

Imagine wandering around a brightly lit Christmas market on a cold winter’s night, cradling a hot cup of vin chaud in your hand as you browse the pretty snow-dusted chalets for Christmas gifts. Or sitting on the Ferris wheel as it circles through the dark night, high above the yachts in the port and giving spectacular views of the Royal Palace on the rock, the twinkling lights of Monte Carlo, and the moonlit sea. Perhaps you want to try your hand at ice-skating on the rink, or get involved in some of the fun games, parades, and rides of the Christmas market.

The Monaco Christmas market is one of the finest along the coast, and takes place in Port Hercules between the 4th of December and the 3rd of January.

The Christmas Decorations in Casino Square

Monaco’s Casino Square is rather magical at any time of year, but at Christmas, it is a triumph. The fairy tale backdrop of the Belle Epoque Casino set among the palms is heightened by the extraordinary Christmas decorations that fill the square over the festive period.

Breathtaking for young and old alike, the Christmas decorations in Casino Square will run from the 5th of December. Adults will definitely want to dress up for the occasion and enter the casino to admire the opulent décor (and channel their inner James Bond).

Christmas Carousel on Beaumarchais Square

Another festive display that’s definitely worth a visit is the Christmas carousel set up by the Hotel Hermitage. Operating between the 20th and 31st of December, the stunning winter-inspired carousel will be accompanied by visits with Santa Claus and a Noel chalet bar for the adults, serving tastings of caviar, salmon, oysters, and champagne. There are worse ways to pass the time as you watch your children spin around happily on the carousel.

Christmas and New Year Shows in Monaco

The Salle des Etoiles at Sporting Monte-Carlo is one of the most beautiful opera theatres on earth, and the perfect place to take in a show over the festive season.

On the 30th of December, soak up the opulent, dizzying surroundings as you listen to a performance of ‘Piaf! The Show’, celebrating the life and music of Edith Piaf, sung by the supremely talented Anne Carrère.

On New Year’s Eve, participate in a grand Monegasque tradition and enjoy a gala dinner and show at the Salle des Etoiles, with Claudio Baglioni, one of the most famous Italian singers of all time, performing.

Children’s Workshops

Families will enjoy the spectacular Chocolate Christmas Tea held on the 20th, 23rd, and 24th December at Hotel Hermitage, where a huge buffet of pastries and sweet treats are accompanied by mini pancakes and a chocolate fountain. With pastry making workshops for children, a storyteller, Santa, and a face-painter on site, you’ll have to drag the kids away!

As you’d expect, Monaco has some seriously swish high society events to attend over the festive season, whether you’re in the mood for a Christmas feast, a Michelin-starred 8-course New Year’s Eve dinner, or an all-night party. Below are some of the events.
